A “talent list” in Hong Kong could open up jobs for expats
If you’re thinking of moving to Hong Kong for work, your opportunities could be increasing soon.
In July this year, the Hong Kong government is planning to release a “talent list”. The list will highlight areas where skills and labour are low. And who knows, it may just come with attractive packages to lure overseas talent to fill the gaps.
“Manpower and talent shortages in the workforce have impeded Hong Kong’s economic development and competitiveness,” said Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po in his budget speech on 28 February.
This won’t mean open-doors for all expats, of course. But with so many visas depending on an existing job offer, it could make entry easier – if you have the right skills.
“On the premise that local workers’ priority for employment will be safeguarded, we should consider increasing imported labour in a timely manner and on an appropriate scale to address the specific needs of individual sectors,” Chan said.
A concern is the shrinking workforce in Hong Kong as the elderly population increases. The percentage of residents 65 or older has risen nearly 6 percent over 20 years. One projection estimates almost a third of the population will be 65 or older in 2041.
One of the biggest known skills shortages is in medicine and healthcare. Construction and, (unsurprisingly) elderly care, have also been highlighted.
Several countries already have skills shortage and talents list, and offer a range of visas and incentives to attract foreign talent. It will be interesting to see what the government comes up with later this year.
So keep an eye out. 2018 could be your chance to shake up your career and make a move to this singular city state.
